I Love the Open Country

I love the open country,
The wind & clouds & sky;
The waving fields of ripening wheat
and pastures green near-by,
And cattle grazing happily
at any time of day;

The winding road that seems to lead
to places far away,
And over all a soft, gray fog,
Comes creeping on its way.
Day is over, the sun has set,
and night wraps all

The sun going down red behind the distant hills

(unfinished and unsigned)
